The city will stop charging for parking at the Front Street lot on Sundays starting next month, the transportation department said Friday. The change covers the 140 metered spaces between Dock Street and the ferry terminal.
Weekday and Saturday rates stay at $2 an hour. The department estimates the lot takes in about $1,900 on an average Sunday, most of it from ferry passengers.
Council member Rosa Lindqvist, who asked for the change in June, said the goal is to bring church and market traffic back downtown. The council can end the trial after six months if revenue from the other five city lots drops.
